Series/Canon: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
From When? S1 Episode: Angel
History:
Very complete history
Note that there’s a ton of info here that’s not being used, but will be something I’ll to as Angel develops in game. I’m sorry that I’m giving you such a glut of information. Probably the most important bit is the pre-canon timeline.
Personality:
So much of Angel’s personality is a study of nature versus nurture. Let’s start with the pieces of his personality that he shows the general public. He appears to be shy, quiet and distant. Angel is all of these things, but this is what he’s forced upon himself in order to keep the general public safe from him. He doesn’t want to get involved for fear that he’ll hurt someone. The last time he got involved with someone, she ended up being driven out of a hotel and he ended up hanging from the rafters. Angel doesn’t trust himself to control the demon inside of him so he doesn’t trust himself around people.
Once he relaxes a little and gets involved, different pieces of his personality start to show. He is still quiet and somewhat shy, but he is also wickedly sarcastic and has a deadpan, gallows sense of humor. Angel is adaptable. He blends in with humanity easily. Occasionally, we even get glimpses of the arrogance that was a part of the human Angel used to be. He can be cocky and smug, but it’s not a side of him we often see.
When talking about Angel, you have to realize that there are two personalities at work in one body: the soul and the demon( there’s also Liam, who is Angel’s human counterpart, but that’s not as big a factor as the soul and the demon). Often these two personalities are at odds with each other. The demon wants destruction, murder, blood and all sorts of sadistic things. The soul desperately wants to a good person. It wants to redeem itself for the life that Angelus lived and the things that he did. The soul wants to (as Angel will tell her in a later episode) protect Buffy and guard her. Angel, at this point, has no desire or ambition of being a hero. He simply wants to help Buffy, to make a life that he knows is going to be difficult a little better. At this point, Angel believes that he can make up for some of the things he’s done in his life. However, at every turn and with every waking thought, he struggles with the demon inside of him. BtVS has made it very clear that is it is not the presence of the soul that makes a person good. It simply gives a person a conscience. It’s also made it clear that demons are necessarily good or evil (we see several demons that are ‘good’. We even see Spike being a ‘good’ vampire without the presence of his soul). Angel’s soul is a good one. He wants to be a good person. He wants to make up for the things he’s done. However, to contrast that, his demon is a very evil one. Angelus was renown for his sadism and his creativity when it came to causing pain. That is what Angel contends with every day, with every thought, with every action. Is it any wonder that he weighs his words carefully when he speaks? He is described by Buffy as taciturn in one episode.
Part of Angel’s brevity is due to the above. I think it’s also a conscious decision, a chosen behavior that is in direct opposition to Angelus’ verbosity (and Liam’s for that matter). Angel wants to make certain that he is as unlike Angelus (and in some regards Liam) as possible. His brevity is a reflection of that, as is his desire to blend into the background.
At the point that Angel is coming into New Dodge, his views on family are pretty much nonexistent. He doesn’t want a family or friends because he killed his family. He doesn’t believe he deserves one and, moreover, he is afraid that he’ll hurt any family he does have. Later on in the series, with some growth, Angel will realize that family and friends are good things, necessary things. He has to figure out his place in the world and realize he can be a benefit to society first.
Why do you think your character would work in this setting?
Angel is fluxing in against his will. However, once he finds out that Buffy is there, he won’t fight it. He will assume it’s what the powers that be wanted. He’d gone to Sunnydale with the intention of protecting Buffy, of attempting to make her already difficult life a little less difficult. He will take up residence in New Dodge with that same goal in mind.
The setting will be a little more comfortable to him than a modern city. He’ll adapt relatively easily. Getting involved with people will take a little more work, but he will do so awkwardly and beautifully. He will probably attempt to hide what he is for a very long while. Vampires are a secret thing where he’s from.
What will your character do for work?
Angel is going to be a hunter.
Inventory:
A trunk full of old books, a few weapons (sword, knife, some stakes), a trunk of clothing (standard stuff).

Third-Person Sample:
Moving to Sunnydale had been a leap of faith. It was something that Angel wanted, and it had been a couple of decades since Angel wanted anything at all. He’d thought that Sunnydale was where he belonged, where the powers that be wanted him. He was meant to be there to protect Buffy, to help her and make her life a little easier, at least that’s what he thought he was meant to do. Fluxing into New Dodge had thrown him for a loop at first, but in the end his goal was the same, his role was the same.
Or so he’d thought.
Everything in New Dodge was wrong. It was different. Buffy was so much older, harder, so much more powerful than the girl he’d known. She didn’t need his help, or anyone else’s. It had thrown him for a loop and he’d been trying to find his footing ever since.
In some ways, not needing to protect Buffy, not needing to fight for a world that didn’t know of his existence made life easier. He didn’t have that burden, but in some ways it made his life harder. Angel needed a way to redeem himself for the things that he’d done as a soulless monster. He needed a purpose. Buffy Summers had been that purpose. She’d pulled him out of an alley thrust him into the metaphorical light. Now he was left floundering, looking for a purpose, searching for a way to fit in, a place to belong.
It was intriguing though: a new place, a new world, a fresh start. Maybe he could help in New Dodge. It wasn’t what he’d had in mind, but throughout his very long life, Angel had learned that sometimes the most unexpected things were the ones that made the biggest difference in one’s life.
Darla had been one. Buffy had been another. Maybe New Dodge was a third.
First-Person Sample:
I am fluent in seven different human languages as well as three demon languages. I can quote verbatim the majority of works from Byron, Browning (both of them), Neruda, Dickinson, and Wadsworth. Not to mention a variety of other poets. I’m a fount of history knowledge as well as useless trivial information. For example in 1892, Italy raised the minimum age of marriage for women to 12. I’m an expert in medieval weaponry. I’ve got a pretty good understanding of basic medical knowledge and procedure. I can identify many classical pieces and operas with just the opening strains. Contrary to popular belief, I’m a fairly intelligent guy.
I can’t set the clock on a DVD player to save my life. I can’t program a Tivo and most of the time my cell phone baffles me. I’m pretty sure I’ve got voicemail in my mailbox but I can’t get to it. There are things I can do on the internet, it’s relatively straight forward but Google doesn’t always understand what I want. If my computer ever decides to do anything except exactly what it’s supposed to do, I’ve got no idea how to fix it. It’s frustrating though. I’ve spent over 200 years being smart with a pretty good grasp on the world in general. I struggled a little through the eighties but I was doing fine. All of the sudden the nineties hit and I spend hours sitting in front of my television staring at the blink 12:00 and feeling like an absolute idiot.
